In the early 1980s composer Alan Menken teamed up with lyricist/bookwriter Steve Brown to write a bawdy sci-fi sendup of the Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s.
With a lead role written for the cult star DIVINE and a rock score to die for, ATINA: EVIL QUEEN OF THE GALAXY had great promise.
Sadly, it had not yet reached the New York stage when Brown’s life was tragically cut short by the AIDS epidemic.
To accompany Mr. Menken’s remarkable score, Salty has written a new book which pays homage to Steve (and to all those lost to AIDS) and takes us on a wild ride through this yet-unheard Alan Menken treasure.
